Some buddies and myself recently finished original Hero Quest boxed set and the 14 (....14?) quests. Even though we have access to two expansion packs, it was suggested that we try a new game.

My friend Jon visited http://boardgamegeek.com and came across a relatively new game, called "Descent: Journeys In the Dark" which is in it's 2nd edition.
The Xbox One has some cool features (and had some cooler ones prior to their now infamous 180 on DRM and connectivity requirements). However, I'm firmly seated in Sony's loyal fan base and am feverishly awaiting my pre-ordered PS4 to arrive in November.

That's not to say however, that there aren't some features or functionality that I wish were on my black box of choice. The localized rumble triggers in the XBox One controller seem very cool (though I've heard that the rumble tech in the PS4 controller, while not trigger focused, has been improved to the point of being able to simulate weight transfer...we'll see if that's true or marketing dream weaving). I also like the precise engineered look of the thumb sticks.

But really, what stands out to me isn't a feature, but a design choice. It's the buttons. I can't look away from those beautiful jewels of X, Y, B, and A. 3D letters forever suspended in space...colors that make them appear to actually be glowing against the deep black space void them. They're gorgeous.

Yeah, I know the 360 had similar translucent buttons. But whereas those looked "toyish" these babies just scream class.

Well done, MS. Hey everybody, there isn't just one AAA game this year revolving around a gun-for-hire and a job that ends up being a girl in need of some saving. Naughty Dog, the developers behind the Uncharted series on PS3 have bravely chosen to release a post-PS4-announced, new IP that proves that they can still squeeze some magic out of current-gen hardware.

In doing so, they've set upon the gaming community a title that is a clear evolution of the adventure game genre and one of the highest rated games not just of this year, but of this console generation.
The console wars are not over. Sony's "win" at 2013's E3 cannot be, at this point, directly associated with units shipped, sold, in-use, etc... But one can argue that an interesting stage has been set for the two "hardcore" gaming consoles that will be going head to head in the coming months and years. That narrative seems to be painting the underdog, Sony, as the early fan favorite, essentially erasing their transgressions from the $600 PS3 late launch, and turning the tables on last-gen titan, the Xbox

I'm pretty firmly a Sony guy, I'll admit that. But that's not to say I'm not interested in the Xbox, the games I never really get to play, and some of it's services. I kept a close tab on their two recent press conferences, the world-wide reveal, and the E3 press conference.

A lot of criticism hasn't been solely on the lightning rod features such as a more complicated software licensing model for purchased games or the online requirement (which by the way, they're right, and isn't a big deal...it also has HDMI as your only output and I don't see people complaining about a HDTV requirement), but much of the criticism has been on messaging.

It's no secret that MS has been looking into how the Xbox can be a central entertainment hub for the living room and when looking back to the initial reveal of the Xbox One a few weeks ago in May, I was thinking that maybe they could have taken a page or two from Steve Jobs' playbook.
Microsoft introduced the world to it's next generation Xbox One yesterday. It's a pretty slick device that is set to transform your TV to a slick, fast, and intuitive Smart TV, with multi-tasking, and the ability to play next gen games.

They're taking some flack about not highlighting the gaming aspects during their press conference, but as I'm writing this, I have to admit that it's an interesting proposition. It really does seem to be a revolutionary way to marry various media in the living room, and doing so ahead of the oft-rumored Apple iTV.

With the Xbox One, you can switch between live television, movies, the internet, and games as effortlessly as you do on your portable devices.

That being said, much of what they showed off; checking fantasy sports stats during a game, or taking a quick Skype call, or browsing the web to look up a fact about the show you're watching, the user is already doing with their mobile device. The "Second Screen" evolution of how we watch TV is already upon us, and trying to reel those screens back onto the television makes a major assumption...that everyone watching wants to see those fantasy stats and web page too.

TV's are the centerpiece to a media room. A shared centerpiece. Whereas mobile devices are highly personal devices where we can humor our own unique distractions during a loading screen (which seem to be disappearing anyways) or a commercial break, pasting it up on the shared screen may be an unwelcome annoyance to everyone else in the room. Sure when you're gaming alone, it will be nice to check the score of the playoff series going on in the back ground, but I'm not sure that would work so well for regular TV consumption with your family and friends.

Microsoft did mention that they have 16 exclusive games set for the Xbox One's first year, of which 8 will be new IP, so there's some great promise there, but it looks like we'll have to wait for E3 to see if those are games that will drive sales for the new console.

Xbox One is set to release later this year.Danhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13879910678096115582noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9145665895137047429.post-2152940346061475512013-04-24T11:18:00.000-07:002013-04-24T11:18:18.414-07:00Microsoft Announces Xbox Event for May 21st

We already knew a next-generation Xbox was coming, as sure as the sun is to rise in the morning. 3 months after Sony presented what the PS4 will be capable of, Microsoft will be bringing their vision of a next-gen console.
Announced in August of 2010, Bioshock Infinite has been on many gamer's radar for quite some time. After a couple rounds of delays, the game's attachment to the original Bioshock's legacy, and what some might feel was already a bit too much hype; expectations are as high in the sky as the story's Columbia setting.

What's been delivered in the final product? My impressions below...

Well, the PS4 has finally been revealed, if not unveiled. We got a good look at the controller (subject to change of course) and the output this thing is capable of but not the machine itself, but let's face it, you look at the screen not the console. Overall, they didn't let me down, but they also didn't do much more than stake a flag in the sand. Microsoft still has a very good chance of still stealing the show come E3 in June.

But in an interview with AllThingsD, Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, did bring up a few good points. He didn't pretend to know what Microsoft is focusing on, but he did indicate that Sony is focused on gaming. Without reading too much into it, it's not too much of a stretch to see that Microsoft may be more focused on the living room as a whole, where gaming is just a part of their objective.

If that's true, you'll never know, maybe they'll end up trying to be good at a lot things, but end up not the best at any one. For my gaming, I do like the idea that games would come first, and controlling my DVR through facial recognition and finger snaps would be second.

On the other hand, if they strike a chord with folks and Microsoft's next Xbox makes it into 2 or 3 times as many living rooms, it won't matter if they're the "best", it's where developers will invest their resources.
When working on your terrain, it makes sense to work from macro to micro, at least when getting started. Ultimately, I would love to have garbage cans, street lights, electric lines, maybe even litter like a crumpled up newspaper blown into the corner of a courtyard. But first things first, I want a basic playable table. I've started by creating some basic buildings and I have a surface upon which to place those buildings. Yes, yes we'll need more buildings (currently working on that with an even simpler method!) and we need to add some elevation our table, but let's start with...trees!

I purchased a couple trees that I've yet to base. They look nice...but not incredible. If you only get two "alright" looking trees for around $20 it's going to be very very pricey to play Johnny Appleseed on your table. I knew there had to be a better way.

I ended up coming up with my own approach, which I'll share below.

I have a chip on my shoulder. Days until Sony undoubtedly will reveal the PS4 and I'm actually nervous that it will be underwhelming. I shouldn't care, but lets face it...the PS3 was the quirky "oh, I have a friend with one" console of this generation. Basically like the GameCube.
A friend came over and allowed for the chance to do a new (to us) scenario for Force on Force.

Some rules were of course forgotten, misinterpreted, or avoided, but it was actually a fantastic game for getting a hang of the basics and was quite fun. I think the rules are starting to really sink in, and where things were still foggy, we were able to come to agreement pretty easily.

The scenario was called Contracting Trouble and is actually one of Ambush Alley's/Force on Force's more popular scenarios. A quick Google search will take you to a number of "After Action Reports" on this game. After glancing through a few of those AAR's you're see a trend. The Marines are fucked...
At long last, the next generation PlayStation is soon to be announced. I've played the hell out of my PS3, but it's starting to get a little long in the tooth. Your move, Microsoft...

No sooner had I sung the praises to a fantastic evolution of the Never-Ending Runner genre, Run 'n' Gun, Temple Run returns with it's sequel.

The problem is that it's obvious improvements (cleaner look, more things to do than just out-do yourself) are incremental when compared to actual game play improvements. In that same Run 'n' Gun post I gush over the camera drop when sliding. It's effectiveness is amplified with every static-camera slide I do in Temple Run 2.

Imangi Studios missed an opportunity with Temple Run 2. Touch input can be laggy and the character animations are just as low production value as in the original. Every abrupt, jarring turn is a distraction, not a continuation. Animation should have been one of the first items they sought to improve. I'm surprised the camera doesn't drop for when you're sliding under an obstacle, because it appeared in the Disney Pixar branded Temple Run Brave.

Yes, there are some added characters. Yes, there's a new mine environment. But here the sum of new features are leaps and bounds less than the game as a whole. Two runs forward but definitely one run back.

But, what do I know? It's number one in the App Store.

Temple Run 2 is developed and published by Imangi StudiosDanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13879910678096115582noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9145665895137047429.post-5609482025735435242013-01-19T09:31:00.000-08:002013-07-02T06:12:36.467-07:00Far Cry 3: Release Impressions

I feel that I'm far from having the credentials or qualifications to review a game, however as I'm want to talk quite a bit about video games, I'll be happy to share my impressions and opinions on this blog.

Far Cry 3 ended up being my only physically packaged "full release" video game acquisition of 2012 (2013 should keep my thumbs busier). Some lists have placed it among the years best games, especially among shooters, so I'm hoping my patience will be rewarded.

There may be some spoilers below, but I'll try to keep things to a minimum.
It's like the little signals that indicate the changing of the seasons. When the dandelions begin releasing their downy seeds, autumn is just around the corner. As the ice cycles shift from a rhythmic drip to a orchestral cascade, spring will soon be in the air. When there's some plug in a mansion with 40 emotional wrecks vying for his love and affection (or when it's a single emotional wreck with 40 plugs vying for hers) it's time for my friends and I to geek out with some beer, wings, and Hero Quest while our significant others brush up on television's finest garbage.

I've been looking forward to developer Warballoon's Star Command since the summer even though it's a genre I don't generally give much play time to and on platforms I don't spend much play time on.

That said, I've been ready to hand over somewhere between $.99 and $5 if they ever finish this thing.

I bring it up because I've just noticed a website redesign, and their blog has indicated a targeted January "soft launch."

Then again, their twitter account just said something about bugs and being "not quite there".
As we near official acknowledgment of a new Xbox and PlayStation, "backwards compatibility" (or lack thereof) as a feature is already a lightning rod for criticism over systems not even announced, much less, released.

Is this feature one that we should hold these manufacturers to?

After a few weeks and a re-read of the rulebook, it was time to try another game of Force on Force. I decided to do a second play through of A Few Blocks of Hell for a couple of reasons, but mainly because it's an symmetric engagement (asymmetric have slightly different rules adhered to by the opposing forces...to learn the game we might as well have both sides be playing by the same rules), there are no vehicles (again, that would add some complexity that I don't want to deal with, and besides, I have no vehicle models!), and most importantly I have just enough miniatures to run this game (which luckily doesn't have any reinforcements!) and that's using some US Recon Marines playing the part two enemy fire teams.

Read on to see some snapshots of the upgraded table (though I could still use a few more buildings) and notes on what I learned or changes made on the second attempt at this Force on Force beginners scenario.
My first batch of 10 or so Taliban Miniatures are complete...just in time for me to realize that I've created some very unfashionable and in-turn completely unrealistic fighters. Whoops.

I've mentioned something to this effect before, but for all the ways I use my iOS devices (and I'm a heavy user) gaming is not really one of them. I take that back. I do play games on my phone, but it's usually the type of game that can be enjoyed in micro-sessions; waiting in line, waiting for a flight, waiting for a show to start or a commercial to end.

My iPad, even with it's bigger screen, get's even less play time. And I've sprung for games on it. Right now there are no less than 10 games loaded on it, and most of them are what might be described as "premium experience" games. Rainbow Six. Sword and Sworcery. Aaaaaaaaaa! etc...

I even downloaded the new Borderlands Legends and am eager for Star Command if it ever comes out. But the way (and the where) of how I use my iPad just doesn't lend itself to gaming.

I don't have it ready at a moments notice, like my phone being in my pocket. And yes, while I do have it with me at the airport, the games that are more iPad-centric are still not that enjoyable when it comes down to it.

There are a few exceptions, of course, and Zen Pinball is one of them.

For me, 2012 was somewhat of a drought for new games. I believe the only 2012 release I purchased was a downloadable game (albeit a good one) and though there were a couple of packaged releases that interested me, none of them won my hard earned cash.

I've noticed this console generation, that for me, there has been a pattern. An on year, and an off year. 2013, looks to most definitely be an on year where my aged Fat Boy PlayStation 3 will be stretched to it's limits, and will hopefully survive into 2014, where a PS4 or XBOX 720 are waiting to grab the baton.

So I was finally ready to start my first official scenario from the Force on Force rulebook, A Few Blocks of Hell. I didn't take (nor did I plan to) enough notes for this to be an actual AAR (After Action Report) to be consumed by wargame hobbyists, but again, wanted to simply document my foray into the hobby itself.

Pics and some learnings if your read on.
