iOS Game Recomendation: Super Hexagon

Well, wouldn't you know it?  I'm going to talk about an iOS game.  Generally speaking, I don't get too excited for iPhone/iPad games.  I used to. But I've been disappointed once to often.  That's not to say I don't play them, I do.  But they're "dispossible".  Yeah, I'll shell out $.99, usually only if it's a single price for both iPhone and iPad versions (I'm looking st you Angry Birds in Space), but I rationalize it like I would a Juke Box or Pin Ball purchase.  This isn't a long term engagement, it's a temporary experience.

A couple days ago, I came across a new temporary experience that is well worth a $.99 play.  It's called Super Hexagon and as of today is still on sale for the low low price mentioned above.

This game falls in the "endurance" genre where you're just trying to keep going as long as you can.  The thing is, you're generally only going to play a round for less than a minute, but a gaming session for at least a couple.

The stripped down user experience is great.  You have some very jammin' chip tunes, and a soul-less female computer voice saying "Begin...Game Over.  Begin.............Game Over.  Begin....Game Over."  And then eventually, you get it, and it's "Begin................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................Game Over.  Begin."

The game play itself is also quite simple.  Direct a small triangle icon through the gap or gaps in a geometric shape that is converging in on the center.  These shapes become increasingly complex.  What you end up with is a frantic maze, where you're making split second decisions.  In this way it's as if the game designer, Terry Cavanagh, looked at how to bottle the lightning that is those last few lines in Tetris where you're able to keep things going before reaching the top.

Bottom line:  Great mobile game that truly can be fully experienced in bite-size sessions.
